Our

Story

Since 1952

From a humble handcart,

to a beloved legacy

1952

Our History

My grandfather, Sardar Lal Singh, came from Pakistan in 1947. He tried various businesses, but they didn’t succeed. Finally, in 1952, he started a milk business, making khoya and rabri to create kulfi. He would sell it on his bicycle outside schools and colleges. As the popularity of his kulfi grew, people started calling it ‘Lal Singh ji Kulfi.’ Later, in 1965, he rented a shop in Ludhiana’s Fieldganj and expanded his business. When my father Sr Rajinder Singh Basant joined the business, they introduced new flavors like vanilla, strawberry, and tutti-frutti.

As the third generation in the business, I’ve seen our company grow significantly. In 2002, we set up a factory that produces 30,000 liters of ice cream daily. We have around 40 franchisees, 20 super distributors, and 800 outlets in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal, and J&K. Our ice cream is considered premium, comparable to brands like London Dairy and Baskin-Robbins. We’ve won several national awards and gold medals, and I’m honored to be the Vice President of the All India Ice Cream Manufacturers Association. My father is the Chairman of the Punjab Ice Cream Association.

We’re now setting up a new plant with a capacity of 100,000 liters per day, aiming to capture 70% of the market share in our region. We’re also planning to export our ice cream, as people from around the world who know our brand are asking us to expand globally

Our Legacy Forged in Flavor

1952

A Humble Beginning

The Basant brand was born when Lal Singh ji, with immense dedication, began selling his exquisite handmade kulfis from a simple handcart. He would visit every school in Ludhiana, sharing his sweet creations. It was a true family affair, with his wife and sister lovingly preparing the kulfis at home for the next day's sales.

1958

The First Sweet Home

Lal Singh ji's growing popularity led him to rent a small shop at Field Gunj. It was here that he officially coined the cherished name "Basant Ice-cream." This very outlet, later purchased by him, continues to be a cornerstone of the brand, still clocking the highest sales.

1964

A New Generation Joins

The legacy began to expand as Lal Singh ji's son, Rajinder Singh, then just in Class 8, eagerly stepped in to help his father. Together, they started introducing new flavors and offering more delightful choices, broadening the Basant experience.

1972

Flavorful Innovations

Rajinder Singh joined the family business full-time, ushering in an era of exciting experimentation. They diversified the ice cream business, introducing beloved innovations like fruit ice cream, the traditional kulfi gharey wali, refreshing milk badam, and the ever-popular kulfi faluda.

1982-85

Era of Growth

This period marked significant expansion for Basant Ice Cream, as the brand's reputation for quality and taste spread, leading to remarkable business growth and a wider customer base.

1990

Diversification and Expansion

The 90s saw Basant evolve beyond just ice cream. The brand expanded into fast food, restaurants, and even a resort, extending its reach across Ludhiana and into other cities, becoming a multi-faceted name synonymous with quality.

Today

A Cherished Ritual & Spreading Joy

Today, Basant Ice Cream is not just a treat; it's a cherished ritual for many, deeply woven into the lives of Ludhianvis and beyond. With 10 franchisees and 70 dealers, Basant's sweet presence now graces Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu, continuing to spread joy and pride across regions.
